Latin America Stream – Comparing Authoritarianisms: Latin America and elsewhere

We would like to put together a stream of papers that discuss the authoritarian drift in Latin America, either comparing between countries within the region, or comparing Latin American cases with others from different regions. The stream organisers are especially keen to include comparative papers focusing on Brazil, Turkey and India. For a fuller discussion, we welcome papers that discuss the achievements and limitations of “Pink Tide” politics and policies, that trace the impact of the global economic transformations since the 2008 financial crisis, and that examine the changes in class relations since the 2000s. We also would like to engage in the theoretical discussions on the crisis of liberal democracy as well as the concepts such as populism, fascism, and neoliberal authoritarianism. At least one session of the stream will be dedicated to comparative studies on the resistance strategies against authoritarianism.
